Crewelwork Flower Sampler

Embroidery

Create a traditional Crewel work sampler using silk on silk.The design features a Hellebore, and has a little gold thread to give it a finishing touch.

Course Description

This course will teach you a range of basic crewelwork stitches. Working with silk on silk Dupion you will build up a flower motif, based on the hellebore flower. There is also a little touch of gold thread. Crewelwork is a traditional embroidery technique, also known as Jacobean it stems from the earliest forms of embroidery, an early example being the Bayeux tapestry. It was very popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Traditional designs are Tree of Life, mythical animals, and flower motifs.

What You’ll Require

  • 10” x 10” piece of Ivory silk dupion
  • DMC threads 699, dark green
  • 712 cream
  • 743 yellow
  • 906 mid green
  • 907 light green
  • Gloriana thread - Cherry Tart
  • Anchor metallic thread 9306 gold
  • 2 x size 10 embroidery needles
  • 1 x fine chenille needle.
  • A copy of the design sheet
  • A copy of the stitch guide
  • scissors, a sharp pencil, or fabric marker, and an 8” embroidery hoop.
