What You’ll Learn

Skills Required

  • The course assumes no previous knowledge of crochet although you will need access to the internet/software that will enable you to download/save your course to your device.
  • You will need some basic knowledge of hand sewing to try out the pattern at the end as there are parts that require small amounts of sewing.

Course Description

The introduction to crochet course is aimed at beginners/novice who would like to learn the basic steps to starting out in crochet.

It is also an ideal starting point if you are still fairly new to crochet and would like to know how to read crochet patterns or what the different abbreviations mean.

The course is intended not necessarily to teach you about making your projects; but to help you learn the basic skills and techniques used in crochet.

What You’ll Require

  • You will need a crochet hook size anywhere between 2-4mm
  • Any colour yarn in DK (double knit) of your choice (as a recommendation, lighter colours may make it easier to see your work more clearly).
  • A pair of scissors
  • Notepad/paper and pen

Part one: An introduction to crochet 24m 57s

In this section we will explore a brief history of crochet and its use today. We will then look at the anatomy of a crochet hook and how we might hold it, moving on to thinking about hook styles and some thoughts on sizes to use, followed by some other accessories you might find helpful.

At the end of the section we will then look at some quick tips for choosing yarn for your projects before looking at those first early stitches!

Part two: An introduction to crochet 29m 18s

Here in part two we will start to look at those basic stitches needed in crochet.
The basic techniques of crochet:

We will start to learn about the slip knot and foundation chain, and how we make that first foundation row.

Working on from that we will start making those first stitches and the 3 main stitches that are particularly helpful as a beginner. You will learn:

1.Double crochet (UK) or Single crochet (USA)
2.Half treble crochet stitch (UK) or Half double crochet (USA)
3. Treble crochet (UK) or Double crochet(USA)

At the end of the session we will bring it all together with practice swatches of your own with a small task for your to try out in your own time.

In part three we will be looking at patterns and how they might be set out.
We will look at the some of the most common abbreviations in a pattern and what they mean and will then look at how to read a pattern from the example provided.

Finally we will then wrap up the session by starting to think about your own style of crocheting, what kind of projects you like and to now start thinking of yourself as a crocheter!
